Thanks to research conducted by biologist Alvaro Cogollo (Botanical Garden Medellin), more than 20 species new to science (new to the world) were discovered, and new records for other flora of Colombia have been made. It is important to stress that the region was considered by Renteria and Prance (Biologists) as a potential shelter for Pleistocene fauna.
